The UK Hotel Guide:

With millions of people visiting the UK every year, somewhere to stay is obviously a must-have – and with hotels and B&B’s in abundance, they won’t have far to look. Prices vary depending on the location and classification of the place, and guests can usually go online to find themselves the ideal hotel, and to read some reviews of people who have stayed there before them. Those travelling on business are typically dependent upon establishments that are good quality, nearby their place of employment and that won’t break the bank. More and more people are turning to online sources to guide them in the right direction when looking for the ideal accommodation; it serves businesses well to keep guests happy and to make themselves known on the web.

Although there is a fairly even spread of hotels across the UK, it is perhaps no surprise that there is a higher concentration in the cities, particularly London – which is a constant hive of activity, and a magnet for tourists. There are also more hotels lining the coasts as well, usually appearing in greater numbers around seaside destinations and harbours. Whilst prices in big cities such as London and Manchester tend to be much higher than more rural areas, there are some high quality places available at other popular tourist spots, such as Bournemouth, which can command top end rates.

A popular type of hotel at the moment is the ‘boutique hotel’, a by-word for intimate, luxurious environments, characterised by their quirky nature. Most boutique hotels are what you could describe as the opposite of chain/branded hotels, standing out from the crowd by implementing themes or individual styles and taking some inspiration from the personal, welcoming atmosphere offered by Bed & Breakfasts. The UK is currently spearheading the boutique hotel revolution, and hundreds are located throughout the country.

Unfortunately, the UK has its fair share of less than desirable locations, like any country – no place is going to have 50,000 perfect hotels. Perhaps due to the high concentration of establishments, seven out of the ten worst hotels in the country can be found in London. Slightly less discouraging is the fact that the UK as a whole has very high standards for accommodation, and enjoys a great reputation for quality, affordable places to stay. Hotels are usually classified with stars to indicate how highly rated they are, but the AAA and their affiliates use diamonds – to differentiate themselves from other awarding bodies. Stars are awarded based on the food services, entertainment, view, ease of access, location and room variation provided by the hotel.
